In 1986 when, heir to the British throne, Prince Charles converted his Duchy Home Farm to a completely organic system he was called a "loony" by the press. Fast forward twenty five years. He's now considered the "Patron Saint of Organic" and the industry is booming. Between 2002 and 2008, worldwide sales of organic food jumped from $23 billion in to $52 billion. But what exactly is organic food and is it the real deal or an overhyped and overpriced luxury?
According to the USDA, products need to have at least 95% organic content to be classed as ‘organic’. This is one classification in one system, with further systems in each country . However the over-riding spirit of organic production is food made with natural ingredients, free of chemicals, and in an eco-system that is as natural and considerate of the surrounding environment.
