As geeks, hackers and other furtive purveyors of computer technology and services, we're generally drawn to adult sites after a long day of coding (only speaking for myself of course).
In any event, I asked a friend of mine that works at one of the largest porn sites in the world if she would mind sharing browser percentage numbers with me. She said sure, so long as I would just display the browsers and their percentage users.
It was interesting to see what "typical" non-tech users are using. When I use the word "large" below. It means over 5 million unique visitors monthly.
A large porn site:
1. Internet Explorer / Windows - 59.4%
2. Firefox / Windows - 24.5%
3. Safari / Macintosh - 4.3%
4. Chrome / Windows - 2.9%
5. Opera / Windows - 1.9%
6. Firefox / Macintosh - 1.6%
7. Mozilla / Danger Hiptop - 0.8%
8. Firefox / Linux - 0.5%
9. Safari / Iphone - 0.5%
10. Safari / Windows - 0.5%
A large "Mainstream" Site:
1. Internet Explorer / Windows - 49.5%
2. Firefox / Windows - 21.4%
3. Chrome / Windows - 7.2%
4. Safari Macintosh - 7.2%
5. Safari Ipod - 3.3%
6. Firefox / Macintosh - 2.2%
7. Safari / Iphone - 2.1%
8. Safari / Windows - 1%
9. Safari / Android - 0.8%
10. Opera / Windows - 0.6%
Its interesting to see that porn surfers are using the desktop more, while mainstream use on mobile platforms is widening. Could porn users just want a bigger video/photo experience?
The Safari browser is also used more on mainstream sites, especially mobile.
Most interesting of all, people using porn sites, tend to use Internet Explorer more, despite the known issues with that browser on many smaller questionable adult sites.
Finally, Internet Explorer is breaking down to close to 50% of browser use overall on mainstream sites, and the mobile platforms (especially Apple based) are gaining ascendence.
