How To Avoid a Messy Breakup

Sex Tip

There is no easy way to dump someone but there are certain actions you can take to avoid a messy breakup. You want to be gentle on your partner's feelings without being so subtle that they don't understand that you're breaking up with them. If you know that you're ready to move on from your relationship but you are afraid that the breakup is going to be gruesome, take a look at these methods to avoid a messy breakup.

Golden Rule

As kids, we all learned the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Basically, treat others how you want to be treated. If you want to avoid a messy breakup, dump your partner the honest way. Don't break up with your partner by just ignoring their calls, or by blowing them off. Don't break up over texts, Facebook, or on the phone. If you know that you want to end your relationship then do it the honest way – meet up with your partner and tell them that you don't want to be with them anymore. There is no easy way to dump a person but there are ways to make it a little easier.

Timing

You're never going to find the perfect time to break up with someone because it is difficult to hurt someone that you care about, so don't string them along because you can never find the "right" time. Break up with your partner when you come to the definite decision that you're ready to break up because otherwise you're leading them on. However, have some compassion and realize that there are certain days you shouldn't dump your partner: their birthday, Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day, your anniversary, the day before or the day of a big work or school presentation, etc.

Private Location

Because breaking up with your partner is probably going to create a dramatic scene, do it in a private location. Don't bring your partner to a public restaurant or coffee shop because the situation might get tense and heated. Breaking up with your partner in a public place will not make it easier and it won't stop them from yelling or crying, but it will probably embarrass both of you. Make sure that you do it in a place that your partner can leave or in a place that you can leave, without having to deal with an awkward drive home together.

Fidelity & Honesty

Cheating on your partner is a sure way to enter into an extremely messy breakup. Don't go behind your partner's back and hook up with other people before you have officially broken off the relationship. Cheating on your partner is betraying them and that will make for a very messy situation. Likewise, don't start lying to them about your whereabouts, or about why you can never hang out. Give your partner the respect of telling them like it is and don't beat around the bush.

Don't Hook Up

If you're trying to get rid of your boyfriend or girlfriend, don't give them hope for the relationship by hooking up with them – this includes hooking up after the breakup. Your partner (or ex partner) probably still has feelings for you so hooking up with them will give them the wrong impression. Also, it will make it harder for them to move on. Eventually you're going to find someone else that you want to be with and you're going to have to end the "friends-with-benefits" relationship, and it will be just as hard as when you ended the original relationship.
