How to Date a Cowboy

Article

If you've decided to hop on a horse with your cowboy love interest, but now you don't know where to go. Dating a cowboy isn't too difficult for people that live in a farming community, but to "city folk", some tasks may seem a little tough. Here are some tips to help you out when you plan to date a cowboy:
Figure out what kind of cowboy you’re dating
First of all, there is not just one generic cowboy.  Unfortunately, they don’t come in one size fits all.   There is the farm/ranch cowboy, the rodeo cowboy and the Hollywood cowboy.  Even within those groups, you have the standard, cheater/player, Mr. Right, and Mr. Right Now.  So, let’s break them down. The Hollywood cowboy is the easiest to date.  He is for those of us who are going through our “I want a cowboy” phase.  He is perfect, mainly because he is in his “I want to be a cowboy”  phase.  You have to be careful of him though; he may grow out of his cowboy phase before you grow out of yours. Then there’s the rodeo cowboy.  He is usually the “bad boy”  type.  He lives by the “love ‘em and leave ‘em” philosophy.  He is fun, charming, arrogant and perfect (for right now).  Just like any other bad boy, you are not his #1 (or even his #2).  You will most likely fall for all the perfect things he says and him.  Then, just when everything is wonderful, he will break your heart. Last is the farm/ranch cowboy.  Let’s just start with the obvious; he has a steady job.  Already a plus.  Usually this type is the one you want for a long term relationship.  But be careful what you wish for, you may just get it.  However, don’t look for a ring anytime soon.  Diamonds are real high on his list.  He is funny and charming, yet responsible and trustworthy.  Fear not giving your heart to this cowboy.  If he decides you’re the one, you can’t beat him off with a stick. Whichever type you have chosen, there are a few things you need to know before you get into a mess.
Be aware of a cowboy’s emotional state
Cowboys are just like puppies.  Don’t take him home if you’re not willing to take care of him, because if you don’t he’ll just go right back to his momma.  He knows she always will.
Respect the cowboy’s mom
That brings me to my next warning, I mean, tip.  Regardless of how you feel about her, his mother will always be the Queen.  So, for a happy relationship, don’t say anything bad or disparaging about or to her. If he hears about, you will NEVER live it down.
Some quick cowboy facts to study…
If you don’t already know the following, you may want to learn them quickly.  The gestational cycle of horses is 11 months.  Horses wear shoes (although not any that you would buy at Nine West).  Cattle are vegetarians.  A T-bar is a fence post, not a bar and grill in Lewisville, Texas.  I tell you these things; because it is likely they may come up in conversation.  Also, you may want to go online a study up a bit.  He may just be impressed that you know about what he does.
Don’t expect to watch your movies
Also, you may as well get used to watching chick flicks alone, because unless you offer a great “incentive” package, he is NOT watching them.  While you’re at it, get acquainted with every Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis and every other action or western movie every made.  Oh, and if you really want to impress him, watch “The Outlaw Josie Wells.”  It’s a long movie, but you will reap the rewards. Although, there are some disadvantages to dating a cowboy. There are some phenomenal perks as well.  Finding the right cowboy for you is like finding the right little black dress.  You just know when it fits right.  He will too.  When this happens, he will be loyal to a fault, loving, caring, and (just like any other Mr. Right) perfect for you.
