You just met a Mormon girl or boy but don’t really know much about the rules they follow when it comes to dating. Maybe you aren’t a Mormon and are worried that he or she won’t be interested in seeing you because of your difference in religions. Here are some tips/facts about dating a Mormon that should help you along the way.
Understanding a Mormon
The first step to approaching Mormon is understanding that they follow many guidelines. Mormons are advised not to date until they reach the age of 16 and are also told that they should not go on one-on-one dates but on group or double dates. Also, a lot of times Mormon boys and girls will only date people who practice the same religion. It is important to not be offended or upset if the person you are after won’t date you because of your religion. It is nothing personal and chances are that turning you down was probably not something that they fully wanted to do. It was something that they either had to do or felt obligated to do. Many people are different and have ranging values. Some may be more prone to going against what their religion suggests and others follow the system very strictly.
Participating in Mormon activities
Keep your mind open when it comes to Mormon activities, rituals and beliefs. Some of the things that they do are very similar to practices of other religions and others may seem very unusual. For example, a person who is a movie-buff or has a harsh mouth may be thrown off when he or she finds out that Mormons don’t swear or watch R-rated movies. Frequent weekend mall-goers may also be caught off guard when their Mormon date cannot spend money or go shopping on Sundays and partiers may not be too keen on steering clear of the bars. Try to accustom yourself to a wholesome environment because they don’t drink and they avoid a tainted atmosphere. People who are of another religion, though, may not be surprised to hear that Mormons pray before each meal and also attend a school called Seminary (similar to CCD or Sunday School). Seminary classes are for teenagers and they focus on the Bible/Book of Mormon during the course of a week – generally before school and sometimes during.
Respecting a Mormon
It is extremely important to be respectful. It is very offensive to speak inappropriately because it simply goes against their values. It is definitely ok to have a sense of humor but be careful to not go over the top and say something that they won’t be comfortable with. Avoid foul jokes and be polite. Basically, pick and choose your words.
Realizing that sex will NOT be happening…
Don’t have high expectations when it comes to the bedroom. Mormon boys and girls make remaining innocent one of their top priorities in life and it certainly isn’t something that you should try to sway. It’s ok to have some physical contact but keep it limited to holding each other’s hands and kissing unless he or she grants you permission to do more. Don’t be surprised if things move very slow in the intimacy department and be aware that many Mormon’s plan on staying pure until marriage. This lays in-sync with their Law of Chastity. Don’t initiate any type of relationship with this person if it isn’t something that you think you can handle because it is a characteristic that they hold near and dear to their hearts.Mormons have many values and follow many belief systems. If you have your eye on a boy or girl who practices this religion, make yourself aware of their principles before you try to make a move.
