If you are an atheist dating an atheist, then the process should be fairly simple. You can just go about your days in a normal way, sharing a person’s beliefs and thoughts on the world. But let’s assume that you are reading this because you are a religious person trying to date an atheist. That can be a bit of a challenge. Atheists are characteristically strong willed and unwavering in their beliefs, and that persistence can be the biggest cause of problems in a relationship. On the other hand though, people who respond to that persistence well and see it as passion rather than stubbornness will usually end up in a very strong relationship. It’s all in how you look at it.
Hooking up with an atheist
If you are trying to ask out an atheist, then they will probably notice the signs of your interest long before you even know that you are sending them. Atheists are naturally intuitive; that’s how they came to their set of beliefs. Don’t think that your flirtation is being ignored. Atheists are usually very open minded thinkers, and they are willing to talk to just about anyone. You won’t need to be shy or embarrassed when you go talk to one. In fact, most will respect you more if you approach them with courage. Just go up to the person and say, “Hey, I like you. Wanna go out?” As blunt and simple as that may sound, it is a very successful tactic in the atheist dating world.
Will religion come up on the date?
Once a person of faith plans a date with an atheist, they usually panic about the topic of religion. Despite popular belief, an atheist isn’t going to question your beliefs the second you sit down at a table with them. They live just as everyone else does, and they date in a normal fashion. The topic of religion probably won’t even come up in the first few dates unless you bring something up. If you want to get that part out of the way, then simply tell them that you are curious about their personal beliefs on the world and see if they are willing to explain. Most atheists are happy to discuss religion with people, but you need to be open minded during the discussion. Prepare questions to ask ahead of time about your religion and the other person’s lack of one and see where the conversation goes. If you’re ready for it, this can be the most fun part of the date for some people.
Being with an atheist
If the relationship works out well enough, then you will of course become an official couple. One of you (probably the atheist) should establish the official moment and then you’ll be an item. You want to stay open minded throughout the entire relationship as well, and don’t be afraid to pick up on some atheist view points. You don’t have to compromise your faith, but it may be nice to look at your situation in a new light. Respect your partners beliefs and do some exploring to find out if what they are saying may in fact be more logical than what you believe in.
Breaking up with an atheist
If you can’t handle the lack of faith anymore, or you just can’t stand the person, then you’ll want to get out of the relationship. You should be as blunt in breaking up with an atheist a you were when you asked them out. Tell them what issues your having in the relationship and be totally honest in your statements. The reason that atheists have a problem with people of faith in the first place is because most of them are hypocrites. You don’t want to be just like everyone else in their mind. Don’t give reasons for breaking up that don’t exist and never be hypocritical in your anger (like asking the atheist to adjust his beliefs when you won’t make any changes in your own). Just be truthful in every regard and the break up will go a lot smoother.
