Arguments suck. We all know that. The fact is that they happen, and you have to learn when to pick your battles. Even though it is nice to be the victor each and every time, sometimes you have to know when to suck it up and let the other person win. As much as it may pain you to do this, it should help out your relationship a lot. Below are some tips that may help you figure out when it is time to back out of an argument.
If the argument is stupid to begin with…
This is talking about the times when you fight over where the missing sock is in the laundry or why someone didn’t put a new roll of toile t paper on that morning. These arguments are petty and don’t last long. Avoid letting your temper and need to be right get the best of you. Instead, just give your partner a “You’re right baby” and do whatever it takes to end things quickly. Although a little argument may seem insignificant at first, it can add up over time. When you have too many of them, they turn into a big argument that blows up catastrophically. Don’t let your pride make that happen.
If you’re WRONG…
This one is pretty obvious, but nevertheless, some people will fight tooth and nail just to make themselves look like the winner. This just makes you look like a chump. Instead of sticking to your invalid point, you really should listen to what the other person has to say. Throwing a temper tantrum over something that you know is blatantly wrong is only going to make matters worse. Once you’ve lost the battle, don’t keep fighting. Suck it up and let things go back to normal.
If being right will lead to another fight…
This is mainly the case when the man needs to be the one to back down because the truth might hurt the woman’s feelings. Since women are sensitive, a lot of things men say get twisted and they end up causing a lot of insecurity and rage. If you’re right about something but it may hurt or further upset your partner, just drop it. Let things fizzle out for a bit and then only bring up what you were going to say if it really needs to come out. If it’s just a passing feeling, let it pass accordingly.
If you’re getting violent…
The last thing you need is abuse in a relationship. If you feel yourself getting angry to the point of violence, you need to back down and walk away. Even if your partner keeps pushing your buttons, its better to leave and vent then to stay and beat. You don’t want to hurt or scare your partner in any way. Just muster up the courage to walk away for a bit and then come back when you both have calmed down. You’ll be able to talk things out much easier then.
