Promise rings are a lot of fun, and they give an indication of commitment early on in a relationship. Although there isn’t as much involved in picking out a promise ring as there is in picking out an engagement ring, the process can still be nerve racking, especially if you’ve never gotten one for a girl before. Below are some tips that you can take with you to the store when that fateful day comes along.
Know what she likes
The easiest way to sort of gage what your girlfriend might like is to ask her opinion about a ring that you found in a catalog. To do this and not sound gay, say that a buddy of yours is picking out a ring for his girl and you wanted a girl’s opinion. If she gets all jealous looking or sad, then you know you are on the right track. If she looks disgusted, then you know you want to try something else. Go through this until you get a rough estimate of her do’s and don’ts.
Figure out her ring size
This one is sort of tricky. If your girlfriend wears jewelry a lot, offer to take some of it to get cleaned for her. You might say that you are doing this for your mom and you want to help her along the way, or you could just act like it is a nice gesture. When you’re there to get the jewelry cleaned (which can be done for free at a lot of places), ask the salesperson what size the rings are. If the girl doesn’t fall for that, you may just have to get a ring that is too big and then get it resized later. Size 7 is a pretty good average to look at.
Know how much you want to spend on the promise ring
Rings can get very pricey very quickly, so you need to set up a budget. $400 or so should suffice, depending on what you want to do. You don’t want to go all out because inevitably you’re going to have to top yourself for the engagement ring. Set the bar high, but not too high. Look for local jewelry sales as they may be the perfect opportunity for getting great jewelry at knock of prices. There is always some kind of 40% off sale going on somewhere. You just have to go find it.
Hearts…
A lot of promise rings have hearts in them. This sort of separates them from engagement rings. If you think your girlfriend will like that, then ask your salesclerk for rings with hearts. There will probably be a whole section devoted to just that. The stone may be a heart or the actual ring may be somehow shaped like a heart. You can pick out what works from there.
Worse comes to worse…
Ask the sales clerk. Say that you are a totally clueless guy trying to get a good promise ring. The salesperson should be able to ask you the right questions to lead to that perfect ring. Then you just have to think about the right way to give it to your girl…
