How To Stop Being a Sex Addict

Sex Tip

Sex addiction is the brunt of many jokes, but the truth is that it’s a real disease that can disrupt a person’s life just as much as other addictions like those that are related to drugs and alcohol.  Those who suffer from sexual addiction often describe it or experience it as being rooted in intimacy issues that progress steadily to the point that they are unable to live their lives fully without frequently engaging in sexual activity, whether it be the physical act of sex, masturbation, pornography, etc.
Common effects of sex addiction
Like with other addictions, sex addicts find that their work, home life, relationships, and other aspects of their life are generally overshadowed and eventually ignored or otherwise poorly managed because of their inability to focus on anything that is not related directly to their addiction.  Further, people who suffer from sexual addiction often find that they are overwhelmed by a sense of shame, low self esteem, and/or despair that stems from their addiction.  As a result, people who are sex addicts find that there are myriad psychological issues related to their addiction and how it consumes their lives, including preoccupation with sex, ritualization of special routines related to reaching orgasm, and compulsive sexual behavior.
Diseases that result from sex addiction
In addition to the psychological issues that are associated with sexual addiction, there are also multiple physical and health concerns for those who suffer from this compulsion.  These can range from sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and AIDS, syphilis, herpes, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia, to physical damage to the genitals, reproductive equipment, or other parts of the body.  Further, there can also be significant social and legal ramifications since many behaviors engaged in by sex addicts are either illegal or socially unacceptable, which can lead to ridicule and job loss.
Look for help and treatment
Due to the emotional, physical, social, and legal consequences of sexual addiction, those who suffer from it are encouraged to seek professional help from someone who is familiar with the plight of sex addicts and nature of sexual addiction, since this disease can also be associated with other psychological concerns like Narcissistic Personality Disorder or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Treatments for sex addiction
There are multiple treatment options available to sex addicts once they choose a competent therapist.  For instance, both cognitive behavior and interpersonal therapy can be beneficial since they will focus on helping the addict recognize the root of the addiction.  Many therapists also encourage group therapy for sex addicts, since it can help the sufferer understand that he or she is not alone or the only person with this difficult but seldom-discussed issue.  Many people also find that a 12-step program like Sexaholics Anonymous to be beneficial in facing and overcoming sexual addiction.
Another treatment alternative
Finally, many therapists will also suggest that medication be used in conjunction with psychological or psychiatric therapy in the treatment of sexual addiction.  These medications usually take the form of antidepressants, which might be able to help reduce sexual obsessions as well as treat mood symptoms from which sex addicts often suffer.
