Did you know that there is actually a way to determine if someone is homosexual beyond the oh-so-scientific gaydar? Indeed there is actually a test out there that will help you see your sexual orientation and other people’s. It’s called the Kinsey Scale for Sexual Orientation, and it is one of the only ways that you can measure sexual preference beyond instinct. Here we’ll explore the scale a little bit and see how you may be able to use it in your own life.
The numbers on the scale
The Kinsey Scale is broken down into the numbers 0 to 6. 0 indicates that a man is completely heterosexual. 6 indicates that the many is completely homosexual. The other numbers adjust themselves accordingly, with 3 being bisexual or equally into males and females. There are a lot of different ways this chart is shown, but they all just indicate the different stages of orientation. To understand it is as simple as understanding any bar graph.
How the scale works
A man can be placed anywhere on the scale at any time in his life. Most men start on the straight side and then slowly work their way up to the gay side if that’s where life is leading. Kinsey himself was a frequent visitor of the other side of the scale, seeking the “relief” from a bunch of his male students from time to time. The scale resulted from a study that indicated bisexuality as being a more prominent way of life than most people assume it to be. Most people aren’t 0s, even if they think they are. They may be a 1 or a 2 where they just have a hint of homosexual in them, but they aren’t “straight as a rod”.
The controversy of the scale
A lot of people in the field of sexology scrutinize the Kinsey scale. Some argue that homosexuality is far more complex than meets the eye, and its not something that can simply be measured on a chart. Despite the controversy, there is no denying the significance of the scale as it does attempt to point out common sexual behavior that most people don’t even realize they think about.
What can you get from the Kinsey Scale?
You might be thinking, what’s the point? Well, you can benefit a lot from really analyzing where you fall on the scale. You may find that the occasional fantasy or two may push you further up than you thought. You can talk to a sexologist to get your official ranking, but you should note that the number you fall under will change throughout your lifetime. It may not jump the scale, but it will probably slide around through time. Try experimenting a little with different fantasy and movies to see if you have a little bit of bi in you.
