Sex during pregnancy seems to be almost forbidden in today’s society. Many couples are afraid of harming the baby or mother during this act. Also, pregnant women are rarely considered to be sexual beings, and therefore many health care providers fail to bring up the subject of sex during pregnancy, and patients are too shy to ask. That said, sex is an important and completely natural part of pregnancy. It is completely safe as long as your pregnancy is normal, free of complications and you are not in risk of your water breaking, as your baby is well protected.
Woman on Top
This position has the woman straddling the man, while he lies down on the bed. This position is great for beginners and larger pregnant bellies, as it takes any pressure off of your abdomen (thus removing the common worry of ‘crushing’ the stomach – which isn’t possible, but still is a thought in young parents-to-be) and allows the woman to control the depth and frequency of thrusting.
Rear Entry
This position is also known as "doggy style", which is when you’re the man stands or kneels behind the woman, and enters from behind. This position is a favorite of many pregnant women because it allows for deeper penetration and also gives the possibility for extra support for the stomach and breasts by using pillows.
Oral Sex
Oral sex during is pregnancy is safe as long as a few precautions are taken. So, if you and your partner plan to engage in oral sex, it is important to be sure to not blow air into the vagina because this could cause something called an air embolism. In such an event, air blocks the circulation in the female, which could be a threat to both the mother and baby. Do what you can to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Anal Sex
As with oral sex, anal is just as safe during a pregnancy as it is during a non-pregnancy, just as long as precautions are taken to ensure mother and baby stay safe. So, during anal remember to take the act extra slowly, to prevent any tearing of rectal tissues, which could open the possibility to infections – not something you want ever, especially during a pregnancy. Also remember to keep stress off the stomach by using a pillow, like you would during the rear-entry position.
Final thoughts on sex during pregnancy…
I hope these tips will help keep the spark in your sexual relationship during your pregnancy. Just remember- now that you are pregnant, you may find that your sexual needs and desires change as your body changes, and you may soon find that sex positions you once found comfortable and exciting may become unpleasant or even painful. It is important to explore different positions and sexual activities with your partner in order to keep the both the spark and the comfort, and excitement, in your sex life.
