I have never seen anyone write that the 69 position can be done with both particpants laying on their sides! It seems as if everyone just assumes 69 requires that for 69 to be done one person must be laying on their back with the other laying front down on top of the other. In that position, with the man on top, the if that man does not hold this pelvis high enough up he can place to much of his weight on his partner's face restricting her from sliding her lips up and down the shaft of his penis, and it could become more of a case wear the man humps the female's mouth instead of it being like she is giving him a blow job while he simulatiously returns oral attention to her genitals.
Even in the reverse situation with the female on top, if the female lets her pelvis drop to where she places weight on the face of the man the weight will likely come down fully on the man's lower jaw restricting his ability to have freedom to move his face around in her genitals and can lead to the man getting left in the position where his tongue and lips are the only things he can use to stimulate her to orgasm and if the man has any reason to need to swallow he will need to pull his tongue away from the female's genitals while he swallows which could reduce the pleasure the female receives.
