Text messaging has probably strengthened the communication between you and your boyfriend, but it also has its downsides. There are times when texting him is appropriate and there are other times when you just shouldn't text him. If you're a texter and you're trying to figure out when you should and shouldn't text, take a look at the list below.
When He's At Work
There are exceptions to this rule: if he initiates the text conversation, if there's an emergency, or if you're just sending him a quick and sexy text for him to think about for the day. However, if you text him and he tells you that he is at work, that means that he is busy and cannot have a conversation at that time. Don't bother responding (even with “okay, call me later”) because breaking his concentration for an insignificant message will just annoy him. Let him get through his workday and he will most likely text you when he's free.
When You're Mad At Him
Don't try to pick a fight with him via text message. If you're in a fight then either call him or meet up, but don't start complaining to him in a text message. Not to mention, in the heat of the moment you might write something that you don't mean, and once you send it you cannot take it back. Remember that he cannot hear your tone of voice in a text, so even if you're just making a bitchy sarcastic comment it will sound like you're being really mean to him.
When He's With Family or Friends
When he is out to dinner with his family or hanging out with the guys, it'll be irritating and distracting if you text him. He probably spends the majority of his time with you, so let him enjoy the few minutes that he is spending with other people. He is probably talking and having a nice time and breaking up a conversation to read your text is distracting. Tell him ahead of time to give you a buzz when he is done with his friends and then wait patiently for him to do so.
When You Can't Reach Him
If you have tried to call him and you cannot get through, don't send a bunch of texts. It's normal to maybe send one text just saying, “Call me,” but don't send him multiple texts threatening his life he doesn't call you back soon. Maybe he is in the shower or maybe he fell asleep; in any case, no matter how many texts you send he isn't going to answer. Or maybe he just left his cell phone in the car. If you send him 10 texts because you cannot reach him then you're going to look like a crazy person when he looks at his phone again.
When You're Explaining Something In Detail
You cannot have more than 160 characters in one text message, so trying to explain something in vivid detail will get confusing. Not only will you have to use a lot of slang to shorten the words but you'll probably end up going over into two or three texts no matter what. If you need to explain something to him that involves thorough detail then give him a call and explain because otherwise you're most likely going to confuse him, and he isn't going to get your point anyway.
When You're Drunk
Sending a drunken text message is just as bad as drunk-dialing. Not only will you make absolutely no sense in your drunken text but you will also probably make a fool of yourself. You don't want him to think that you're a stupid drunk or that you're too available – it's not flattering for your image. If you have a tendency to send drunken texts, put one of your friends on duty to make sure that you don't do it.
