Is it time for a night in with that special someone? Well, here are a few romantic movies to enjoy with your popcorn. There are a couple in here you may want to have your tissues handy for.
Pretty Woman
This classic “Knight in shining armor” tale, released in 1990, stars box office greats, Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Garry Marshall exquisitely directs this romantic comedy about a down and out prostitute (Roberts) who is hired by a wealthy businessman (Gere) to be his escort for several business functions. In the end, Roberts “rescues” her knight. Also, featuring Robert, Gere and Marshall is the 1999 film Runaway Bride. Can you really find love in all the wrong places?
The Notebook
This 2004 romantic drama is based on the amazing book by Nicholas Sparks. Telling the story of Noah and Allie, a young couple who fall in love in the early 1940s, an elderly man reads “the notebook” to a fellow female patient in a present day nursing home. It is directed by Nick Cassavetes and stars Ryan Gosling, Rachel Mc Adams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands (Cassavetes’ mother). Can a man really love a woman this much?
When Harry Met Sally…
Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal star in this 1989 romantic comedy written by Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Riener. The story follows Harry and Sally from the time they meet on a cross country car ride through 12 years of chance encounters in New York City. The characters are loosely based on Ephron and Riener. Harry Connick, Jr. provides 4 of the songs on the soundtrack, including “It had to be you”, “Where or When”, “I Could Write A Book” and “But Not For Me” which earned him a Grammy for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. In 2004, Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan starred in the stage adaption of the film. Can a man and a woman really be just friends?
He’s Just Not That Into You
Based on the same titled self-help book by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, this 2009 romantic comedy is a must see. It is directed by Ken Kwapis and stars the likes of Drew Barrymore, Scarlet Johansson, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Justin Long, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Connelly and Ben Affleck. This hysterical film set in Baltimore, tells the story of nine people at different points in there relationships. At the center of the movie is Gigi (Goodwin), who consistently misreads the signs that men give her about their level of interest. The main moral of each story is that one person is more interested in the other person.
Casablanca
This classic American romantic drama stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Henreid and was directed by Michael Curtiz. Set in the World War II era in Casablanca, this film tells the story of Rick Blain, an American expatriate and night club owner, Ilsa Lund, his exlover, and Victor Lazlo, Ilsa’s fugitive Czech Resistance leader husband. It originally premiered on November 26, 1942 to coincide with the Allied invasion of North Africa and the capture of Casablanca, but was not released to the public until January of 1943. Do you love him/her enough to let them go?
Some others to think about
Those are just a few of my favorites, but there are a few others we can’t forget about such as “As Good As It Gets”, “When A Man Loves A Woman”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” and “Sabrina.”
