Regardless of your reason for using a personal sexual lubricant, there are several things to consider. Whether feeling or function, there’s always something to pin point about certain lubes. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right one for your next hot night.
Water-based lubricant
Although water-based lubes are easier to clean up, they also have a tendency to dry out with heavy use. Also, if your plans include some sexual water play, you should not use this type of lube as water will dilute it. Some of the more popular water-based lubes include Astroglide, Slippery Stuff, and Maximus. Most of these can also be used with a condom, diaphragm, or cervical cap as well as with toys.
Oil-based lubricant
These lubricants are often messier as well as having a nasty habit of staining sheets. Some can even cause vaginal irritation. Also, you shouldn’t used these lubes with condoms, diaphragms or cervical caps as the oils in the lubricant will break down the latex, thus causing them to fail. A few examples of oil based lubes are ID Cream, Wet, and Boy Butter.
Organic lubricant
Not only are these lubricants healthy for the earth, but they are also less damaging to you. Usually, these are glycerin, chemical and hormone free. These can be either oil or water-based. Several that you might look for are Yes, Sensua, and Sliquid. These are usually odorless. You should look for “All Natural” on the label. Most of these also have either no taste or come in fruity flavors as well as having little to no odar.
Silicone-based lubricant
This particular type of lube sits on top of the skin. This sometimes makes it messier. It is paerfectly safe for use with your latex condoms and toys. However, you should not use this with any of your silicone-based toy as it will slowly disintegrate the silicone. You might also be aware that some of these will stain the sheets as well as leave a bad taste in your mouth. Some examples would be KY gels, Doc Johnson, and Durex Play.
Glycerin and paraben free lubricant
An important thing to look for is a glycerin-free lube. Glycerin has been shown to cause yeast infection; sometimes even making them worse. Also, parabens can cause skin and vaginal irritations and allergic reactions in some. So, to avoid a potentially painful situation, do not use lubricants with these chemicals in them.
Durable lubricant
You should also consider the length of time you think you will need the lubricant, before your body’s natural lubricants kick in. You could end up with a flood of problems. Oil and silicone based usually have a longer use time. Some examples that you should use a“less is more” policy with are Eros, Astroglide, and Probe.
Oral lubricant
Finally, depending on your intended use, there are some lubes that are better for oral sex, such as Wet, Motion Lotion, and Kama Sutra Oil of Love. While others are specifically designed for sensation pleasure. These “warming” lotions include Passion Potion, ID Glide, and Forplay. Whichever of these flips your switch, you should make sure to read any and all directions prior to using them.
