I'd be careful about what goes on with Craigslist. That does give you local people to hook up with, but it's also a huge gateway for psychos. Of course, that's the case with just about any anonymous sex hookups. To be on the safe side, talk to the person ahead of time and don't give out any personal details (address, real name, etc). Meet somewhere neutral and semi-public so you are less at risk.
You do have other options beyond Craigslist, like AdultFriendFinder.com or HornyMatches.com. I don't know how well those sites work out because I've never personally used them, but they are like the eHarmony of the sex world. You could also try going to a local gay bar and seeing if you find someone there.
As for how to prepare, that's all up to you. Just be safe about it. Get a hotel room. Bring condoms if you're planning on having anal just to avoid getting #2 on your dick.
