How To Date a Tomboy

The girls who grew up as playmates and lasting friends of the boy next door sometimes never stop climbing tress and making catapults and take their tomboy habits into womanhood. A girl who is a tomboy can be something of an asset to a man who likes plenty of outdoor exercise and has no patience for a girl who needs to be constantly fussed over to make sure she is comfortable and not being made to do things that are too much for her ‘girliness’.

It is a fact that girls mature earlier than boys, and girls who are also tomboys are no exception.  However, they do have one or two character traits not usually found in girls with a more traditional outlook.  Tomboys tend to view the world as a bit of a challenge and seem to feel they must compete with their boyfriends for supremacy when they are involved in physical sports.  If you have a girlfriend who is not happy unless she is beating you on the squash court or making you a complete idiot in front of your softball team, you might have a problem. Here are some tips to help you date a tomboy:

Talking about the fact that you don’t like her tomboy qualities

You could always find another girlfriend but perhaps you like the one you have apart from her annoyingly competitive attitude.  If this is the case, have a chat with her and let her know you are less than impressed by the way she is behaving.  There is no need to be forceful about it, just say it gently but firmly.  Predictably she will remark that you don’t like her being competitive because she is better at it than you are but let this go.  You might find that next time you are in a competitive situation she will ease off a little and not show off her ability to outshine you quite so enthusiastically.  

Respecting the girl in her

Girls who are tomboys can be comfortable companions and slip easily into the role of best buddy more so than a girl who has conventional ‘girlie’ attitudes.  If this is the case, remember your girlfriend is still a girl and don’t treat her as if she is a man: she will not thank you for it.

Inserting some feminine charm

Take the opportunity occasionally to place the two of you in a feminine atmosphere, such as a romantic restaurant or a dance to give your girlfriend the chance to dress like a girl in a pretty dress for a change instead of jeans and a sweater.  She may prefer dressing like a tomboy most of the time but almost every girl still likes to be feminine now and again.

Controlling your friends around the tomboy

Never allow your friends to treat your girlfriend as a punch bag in boisterous field games, even if she has decided she wants to join in.  A girl who has a desire to involve herself in men’s pastimes need not necessarily have the physical strength to withstand physical punishment, however much they might try to tell you they can.  Use your common sense and you should find
